I can't believe I performed post assessments last night with my student!
Overall, my student made great leaps in all areas of study. She went from a N to an O. She was able to use the reading strategies I taught her to help her slow down her pace and read all the words that are on a page. She is able to read for meaning and not just to read words.
I also noticed that she has improved in spelling. She was able to spell five words more correctly then what she was able to spell the first time I met her.
We practiced her poem that she will be performing in two weeks. I know she is excited and I know her family will enjoy it!
My last tutoring session was crazy! I was going from my one student to the next trying to finish up the assessments. My students are nervous about performing. I think they will do fine. My students showed some growth. Particularly in spelling. My students each spelled a few more words correctly. It was tough for me to assess them with F and P. If they hadn't read the book with me they read it in school. My students were just recently assessed at their schools. We worked through it and we did our best. It seems like the semester went by very quickly. I can't believe we are almost done!
I know what you mean! It is difficult some days for ourselves and the kids from being in school all day to tutoring, especially during testing time!! Some days are definitely harder than others. I hope you were able to get through everything ok!!
I also saw some change in Hannah's progress this semester. Hannah Q/R to an S with Fountas and Pinnell. She also made great gains with spelling and word study. She is already was great with both aspects, but Hannah got through all ten lists of Fry words and we ran out of time but I could have assessed her on the next set of words for the spelling test because she got all words but one correct I believe. Hannah has also grown a lot in opening up to new things. She was always silly and talkative, but never really interested in reading and writing. She wrote several good pieces and said she really enjoyed poetry, mainly the games we played as a whole group, but its progress! She also was not very interested in reading, but she tried Skeleton Creek and enjoyed it before getting a little scared and psyched herself out of continuing to read it. She has become more willing to try books that pertain to her interests, whereas in the beginning she was not budging towards reading any book about things she mentioned she was interested in. Overall, I am very happy with Hannah's progress.
I too, cannot believe this semester is already coming down the home stretch. I spent the final tutoring session finishing assessments and allowing my students to practice reading their poems aloud for tomorrows Poetry Presentation. After analyzing the post assessments, I was very pleased with the progress my students have made over the last several weeks. I saw the most gains in reading and writing. Each of my students went up at least one reading level. I also noticed that students were using the various comprehension and fluency strategies I had taught them throughout our time together. This was fantastic to see. My students also increased their writing scores from their pre-assessments. They used better organization and more descriptive words throughout their writing pieces. Overall, I saw the least amount of gains in their spelling scores. Each student increased their scores but not by the amount I was hoping for. I underwent a variety of spelling activities with my students each week but if I could do it again, I would spend more time working on spelling because their scores are evident that they needed more instruction in this area. Overall, I was very impressed with the gains my students made and I'm looking forward to tomorrows presentations!
